I think this was the warmest day of the year so far! On my walk this morning I felt a stream of warm air blowing across the roadway, and I knew we were in for some high temperatures. The high must have been close to 100 degrees. We worked at the Visitors' Center from 11:00am until 6:00pm. Even though the Visitors' Center is air conditioned, we go inside and outside frequently to greet those coming to see Martin's Cove.
This afternoon we had a visit from the daughter of our Bishop and Sister Cannon back home. She was here on the way to Nauvoo for a family reunion. Her husbands parents are in Nauvoo serving a mission, and they are meeting there for both pageants, and Church History, as well as gathering as family. It was good to see her, and meet her family, and show them around the Homestead;

I love taking this picture in this location! Devil's Gate is in the background, and is a significant landmark that the early emigrants and explorers used to navigate from the East to the West. We are also directly on the Historic Trails that include the California Trail, the Oregon Trail, the Pony Express Trail and the Mormon Trail. They all intersect right here!
Mom and I were both up at 4:30am to get ready for the day. We had the assignment to be the Trail Guides for a family, leaving the Cherry Creek campground this morning, at 7:45am after their family trek yesterday. Mom and I were about ready to leave our trailer for the assignment, this morning, when we got a radio call that they were going to drive out in their vehicles. They must have had a hard day yesterday on their six mile trek through Martin's Cove, and decided the extra three miles trekking out of the campground this morning would be too much. Granny and I were looking forward to being with them!
Both Granny and I went through the same preparations, for our day today, with our Scripture reading and our prayers. I also took my three mile walk this morning along the roadway into Missionary Village. We were both ready for the early assignment! And after the Trail Guide assignment we were going to the Visitors' Center for a seven hour shift. We were happy for the extra time at home this morning, but we really enjoy being a part of the trekkers experiences!
Here comes the sun this morning at 5:20am |
And the sunrise at 5:35am this morning |
We had a heavy thunderstorm at 5:00pm as we were finishing a tour group |
The thunderstorms are so welcomed here! The temperatures usually drop 15 to 20 degrees, and are a relief for a few minutes. Then the sun comes back out and the temperatures go right back up! But the heavy winds that accompany the thunderstorms are always appreciated because they eliminate the mosquitoes! Now that is another blessing in and of itself!
It has been a great day here in the mission field! I had the privilege of meeting another family from Utah that was on a Church History tour together. The children were so polite and very receptive to the information I had to offer. I loved the interaction we had during their visit! They wanted to join us here on the blog at some future date, and I hope they comment when they do!
And mom had a very special experience with a couple from Texas. They are Methodists, and they were curious to see what Martin's Cove was all about. Mom gave her usual excellent tour and explanation of the sacred grounds here at Martin's Cove, and shared her testimony with them. And she shared that testimony in a unique way, that she doesn't ever remember sharing in quite the same way before.
She gave them each a copy of the Book of Mormon and again expressed her testimony of that special witness of Jesus Christ. It was a neat experience for her and helped make for a very special day for two senior missionaries!
Have a great evening! Thank you for checking in with us tonight!
