April 10, 2015 - Friday

It was a much cooler day, today.  The sun was shinning all day, but the temperature did not get much above 60 degrees.  Yesterday it was in the high 70's.  After our morning devotional, we took a nice walk around the town and discovered some new roads to walk.  We got back to our home about 7:50am just on time for being at the visitor's center by 9:15am.  As we were getting ready, we had a group arrive for a 9:00am tour!  They informed us that the Nauvoo Visitor's Center told them we opened at 9:00am.... so we scrambled to accommodate them.

The destructive tornado's in Illinois and Iowa came withing a few hours of Carthage, but we had no visible affects.  We did see the damage they did to several towns in the state, but fortunately we were spared, at least for another day.  Our prayers go out to those who had any losses from this natural disaster.

We had some great visitors today and they came in a steady flow most of the day.  Mom had one family that was on their way to the Ukraine.  They were taking two years off to do research with their young family on their Russian ancestors.  They reminded me of the family in the Philippines who had taken a year off for Humanitarian service there.

I told mom what they were doing and jokingly said they could find  out more about mom's family line from her mothers genealogy.  That was just enough information for them to ask for mom's family line and they would do some research!  Also, mom told them of some of her family names that she could remember and they were familiar names to the sister.  And, by the way, they were probably in their late 30's or early 40's with several young children.  Wouldn't it be something for them to be able to break the barrier mom hit on her Russian family line? We will need a volunteer to gather some research from family records back in Rigby!

Then, right before closing at 5:00pm, another family came to the visitor's center and wanted a tour.  Mom and I had a Sunset practice for the summer show at 6:30pm so I offered to give them an abbreviated tour. The entire family was touched by the visit in the jail and I was glad we made the effort to accommodate them today.

As we were going through the tour I asked them where they were from.  They currently live in Kentucky and had recently moved from Clovis, California.  I asked them if they knew the Draper's or the Clasen's from Clovis, and they knew both families.  They were in Jeff and Ellen Clasen's ward in Clovis and knew them well.  They hadn't spoken to the Clasen's in awhile so I gave them Jeff's number.  Small world!

Well, it got even smaller.  Later in the tour I asked if they knew Doug Lasher.  She said; Doug and Liz Lasher?  I said yes, that is my brother and his wife.  She told me that Liz was her Primary Teacher and that the ladies in the ward loved Liz because she was always so bright and cheerful.  They knew about her untimely death and we both shed some tears for our precious Liz.  Here is a picture of this family:  I hope Doug and Jeff and Ellen see this!

Steve and Kim Shreeve family with Summer (13), Sailor (10), Soldier (9), and Sunny (6).
They are all adopted children.  Steve's dad, Sid Shreeve, may have been Bishop when Doug and Liz were active.  Steve also indicated that Lean Henderson was Bishop after his dad and then Masa Hanamaikai was the next Bishop.  I know that Doug was watched over by Bishop Hanamaikai for sure.  What a wonderful discovery today!

Well, needless to say we were very very close to being late for our Sunset practice and we arrived right at 6:30pm.  We were teased by a few that thought we were late because we are always 15 minutes early.  In this case, it was well worth the delay!  I'm glad we did not turn them away from a tour of Carthage jail!

Have a great evening and thank you for checking in with us tonight!
